  • Gravemen | See Thee Gravemen on Myspace
Raw, wild, horrific, and tons of fun is the best way to describe this two man horror-trash band who are visiting us from southern Sweden. These two English guys aren’t interested in pop fame or hit records. They live in a world of gravestones, monsters, werewolves and haunted houses. Sitting alone in the dark watching vintage Hammer Horror films and waiting for gravedigging jobs is how they spend their days. Like voodoo witchdoctors hunting for prey to turn into zombies, Thee Gravemen stalk the stage, spinning lurid tales of the human predilection for sin and man’s capacity for inflicting suffering on his fellow man, all done with fearsome fuzz-busting guitars and crushing, bone-shaking drumming to a sleazy Fall-like rockabilly beat. With a Screaming Lord Sutch tune on the flipside of this single you know it’s going to be a blood-curdling experience!
Time: Saturday, 28 Aug 10 - 8:00 pmto 2:00 am
Venue: Hector's House, Brighton
Bands:
  • Peter David & the Wilde Sect | See Peter David on Myspace

Their approach to music took after the hard-driving style of the barbed-wired* infused rhythm’n’blues and beat favoured by Danish kids in the mid-1960s, the more well known of them being the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, the Yardbirds, Bo Diddley, etc, but also the Downliners Sect, the Namelosers, Q65, Peter Belli & les Rivals, and so on. Their second vinyl single has recently been released by Dirty Water Records. (* Barbed-wire in Danish is “pigtråd”, which is 1960s Danish teen slang for noisy, raw, electric music.)

  • Vinyl Stitches | See The Vinyl Stitches on Myspace

Regulars in the audience at Dirty Water, this trio play primitive rock’n’roll that'll make you think you're listening to a Back From The Grave Compilation. They have fun on their minds, fuzz in their lustful hearts, and dark thoughts in their soul. They recreate that time when young Americans came out of their sleepy towns, high on illicit substances, and set about changing the world with a 4/4 beat. Employing a heady mix of The Stooges, Thirteenth Floor Elevators, and The Velvet Underground, they create an orgy of foot-stomping noise to soundtrack an imaginary psych exploitation movie.

Bands:
  • King Salami & the Cumberland 3 | See King Salami on Myspace

The King howls like Screaming Jay Hawkins with Bo Diddley chasing his coat-tail and with Andre Williams trying to offer up some of his bacon fat. This man never stops shakin' and twistin' and groovin' while the Cumberland 3 (former members of the Ulcers, Chinese Lungs and Parkinsons) play their own branded mix of vintage rockabilly desperate rock'n'roll and a bit of soul with fire, energy, gusto and fun!

  • Atomic Suplex | See Atomic Suplex on Myspace
Maximum Rock'n'Roll says: "Screaming, overdriven rock'n'roll compression at it’s best. Atomic Suplex are the British Guitar Wolf, the English Lightning Bolt or maybe the London New York Dolls." Time Out, meanwhile, says: “This is probably what Bill Haley sounds like if you have the worst tinnitus in the world. Not so much a sonic cathedral as a sonic corrugated iron shed.”

Bands:
  • Despondents | See The Despondents on Myspace
Taking their cues from punk bands past and present The Despondents aim to bring us short sharp garage punk tunes that hit you like an atom bomb. If you like The Rip Offs, Teengenerate, and The Real Losers you will know where they are coming from. The ever-trusty Electric Roulette website says: “The Despondents are here and they’re ready to kick you in the balls with no chords and the fat well and truly trimmed. There’s nothing bad I can say about this record. It’s hard, fast, no frills, full to bursting with attitude and verve. In short, it’s fucking ace.“ Their debut album, on CD only, is out next week on Dirty Water Records.

The King howls like Screaming Jay Hawkins with Bo Diddley chasing his coat-tail and with Andre Williams trying to offer up some of his bacon fat. • Cowbell | See Cowbell on Myspace
Cowbell play simple but effortlessly catchy songs, performed with understated ease and charm; this is a band that all can enjoy. Really. Go and see them play. It is guaranteed you will enjoy the experience. Cowbell are Jack on guitar and vox, and Wednesday on drums. Although they formed less than a year ago ago, this duo is already tight tight tight, churning out country-tinged blues in a wholly unclichéd and cheery fashion. The on-stage chemistry between the pair is palpable, and in their wonderfully unassuming way, they hooked the ear of every person in the room. Influenced by the likes of the White Stripes, CCR, Hasil Adkins, John Lee Hooker, The Sonics, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and a host of other greats, you can get their debut single “Oh Girl” on vinyl or via iTunes now.
Time: Thursday, 12 Aug 10 - 7:30 pmto 11:00 pm
Venue: The 100 Club
Bands:
  • Revellions | See The Revellions on Myspace

With influences including the likes of Dick Dale, The Ventures and The Chocolate Watchband, these young Dubliners combine the gut-wrenchingly raw sound of a garage band in heat with a smooth heroin surf atmosphere. Their debut album is out on Dirty Water Records.

  • Fabulous Penetrators | See The Fabulous Penetrators on Myspace
The Penetrators sound like Hound Dog Taylor and Bo Diddley having a good old medieval jousting session with their gee-tars to the voice of the rotting corpse of John Lennon, a melodic French dwarf and an over-sexed bear, with the drummer from Slayer just having heard Little Richard for the first time.

Bands:
  • Vicars | See Thee Vicars on Myspace

Teenage rock'n'roll terrorists from the small town of Bury St Edmunds on a mission to kung-fu kick all the boring bands out of existence! Real raw and vintage sounding garage-rock'n'roll! Their single, Don't Try To Tell Me, came out on Dirty Water Records earlier this year. Their debut album, "Back on the Streets", came out on Dirty Water Records last year. A second single, You Lie, is out now and brand new album "Psychotic Beat!", which heads in a more sixties garage direction away from the Childish-inspired punky debut - released on 15 December - has been getting great reviews.

Venue: The Stag's Head, N1

Bands:
  • London Dirthole Company | See Dirthole on Myspace

Dirthole plays loud, with short bursts of bruised, anguished, no frills garage punk rock tunes, with two drummers, two guitarists, as many bass players as they can find, and whoever else feels like joining in. Finding time left over whilst working on a session for someone or other at Toe Rag Studios, this bunch of miscreant types who do know better but do it anyway, found they were some spare time left over and did their own thing. And recorded an album’s worth of material in two hours. They enjoyed it so much they decided to be an actual band.

  • Nuns | See The Nuns on Myspace
"It's monk time - it's hop time. Let sapphires glide into the grooves. What is beat? What is beat today? And what is over-beat? And who the hell is going to melt the hot and cold world of tomorrow?" That was five crazy ex-GIs back in 1966 in Germany, who discovered feedback and put out the most amazing album of all time before falling apart and slowly making their way back home to the USA after many years away. Following the Monks' triumphant debut appearance in London at Dirty Water's tenth anniversary in October 2006, a group of young ladies were inspired. Now, it's Nun time!
Time: Sunday, 20 Jun 10 - 6:00 pmto 12:00 pm
Venue: The Stag's Head, N1
Brief:

The Stag's Head is at 55 Orsman Road, just off Kingsland Road, near the canal.

Bands:
  • See See | See The See See on Myspace

London-based The See See are Richard Olson, Pete Greenwood, Kevin Peyok, Paulie Cobra and Ben Swank who originally hail from as far apart as Malmoe (SE), Detroit (US), Leeds (UK) and Auckland (NZ). With histories in bands like The Soledad Brothers, The Waxwings and The Eighteenth Day of May, together they set out for new adventures in rock and roll and psychedelia under their Ma Rainey-inspired moniker. After a debut single that sold out in under a week, a support tour with The Raconteurs and a reputation for lively, exuberant and occasionally chaotic live shows, the band are now putting the finishing touches to their debut album.

  • Keys | See The Keys on Myspace
The Keys, under a previous name, recorded three sessions for John Peel, signed to Too Pure, were lauded by the NME for their ‘glorious jangle-pop’, counted Joe Strummer, and Damien Hirst among their biggest fans and were the “ best new band in Britain” according to Alex James. Now firmly re-established under their new name, they are set to release new album ‘Fire Inside’ on See Monkey Do Monkey Recordings. On the new album they’re still informed by their classic 1960s pop influences but now each piece is more melodic and subtle; swirled with psychedelic patterns. Informed by cult legends like 13th floor Elevators, The Velvet Underground and the Jesus and Mary Chain, whilst imbuing each homespun recording with a personal warmth and experimentalism reminiscent of modern artists like Panda Bear, Animal Collective and Jason Pearce.
  • Instant Flight | See Instant Flight on mySpace
This London based four-piece has such a magical mystery psychedelic pop-rock sound that it’s no surprise that they’ve also performed as the backing band for the legendary Arthur Brown (he features on two tracks on their first album, "Colours & Lights"). Their sound is heavily influenced by the likes of the Doors, Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane and late Beatles – and yet the feel of the songs is timeless, as well as being catchy and powerful. This is truly beautiful pop rock that will makes you fly...instantly!

Venue: The Stag's Head, N1

Bands:
  • Kits | See The Kits on Myspace
These Melbourne natives have a sound that’s a blend of garage rock’n’roll from various parts of the globe. Their debut (Australian) release, "This Is Your Lung", showers you with a wall of howling vocals, thick, mud-drenched guitars and pounding rhythms. They teeter on the brink, like the sensation you get when you almost lose control of your car, just to recover in the nick of time. Their debut album, "Primitive Tales", is out now on Dirty Water Records
  • Sundae Kups | See The Sundae Kups on Myspace
These boys are coming all the way from Coronado Bay, San Diego, California! Having met whilst working at the local Dairy Queen serving ice cream, they got together to play guitar instrumental tunes, under the guidance of their mentor, the surf sensei Soundpapa (himself a hero in his home town of Hakodate, Japan). The Sundae Kups have already travelled to England, where they won over many crowds at the legendary Diplo, Scooterworks & Teen Bop parties. Such a success was their previous visit that they are returning for an extended stay. So get down to their uncontrollable dance dance frenzy now now now!
  • Squirrel Skin Slippers | See Squirrel Skin Slippers on Myspace

The Squirrel Skin Slippers music is as rough-handed honest and straight talkin' as it gets. Their music is stitched together from the beaten skins of old deep south dirty blues, DIY garage music, folk noir and 60's punk and garage spirit. Their sound is like a primal, foot stomping, eye squinting, amped up yet stripped down blend of illegal liquor, with earthy undertones, hints of fruitiness, and subtle infusions of John Lee Hooker, Billy Childish, Link Wray, and the Trashmen. This new and unpredictable creature is then brought to life with their own fuzzed-up experimental style and served with a (friendly) snarl!
