Taking Music Backwards Into Tomorrow

The Boston Herald: Muck and the Mires "Dial 'M' for Muck"

Boston’s Muck and the Mires make rock with the same clatter and harmony that The Who, Kinks and Remains pioneered in the mid-’60s.

Muck and the Mires’ latest little triumph, “Dial M for Muck,” aims for a throwback sound, but it’s still a vital slice of art. Label it punk, power pop or indie rock, “Someday I’ll Get My Way” features a sharper hook than 90 percent of today’s Top 40 hits. I can say the same for “Love Is Gonna Let You Down” and “You Can’t Run Away From Love” (two sides of the love troubles coin).

Sometimes doing something great trumps doing something new. “Dial M for Muck” is one of those times. Wade into the Muck at Sally O’Brien’s in Somerville for just $5 Saturday, when the quartet headlines the club with Tsunami of Sound and the Shambolics.
