Bananas Fanzine: MFC Chicken - "Solid Gravy"
First off, you need to understand that there's usually a guy in a chicken suit at these guys' shows. At least that's what I gathered from a few videos. [PJ: It doesn't happen at every show. Maybe this reviewer saw ME dressed as a chicken on the video of the Funtastic Dracula Carnival from last year?] I think that imagining a guy in a chicken suit is going to help you to appreciate this album. Why? Because it's a pretty jokey, wild R'n'B party record. This is not some moody dissertation on the singer's inner feelings and emotions. It has a lot more to do with what's between your thighs. (Sorry, but I had to go there!)
Musically, MFC take their cues most obviously from the Sonics, especially in the vocal department. Alternatively, imagine Barrence Whitfield leading the Cumberland Three in "Boss Hoss" and you've got it (with more sax).
Also, I have to thank MFC for writing "(Get Outta the) DJ Booth" for all us vintage record DJs who have had to turn down requests for "Rihanna" and the like. If you're one of us, you'll like every lyric in this thing. Best of all is "Don't Wanna Talk ABout Chicken", a rockin' R'n'B tune par excellence. Otherwise, you've got record packed with classic blues riffs, plenty of sleazy sax/chicken innuendoes and a lot of energy. Might as welll have yourself a few pints of beer and grab yourself a bucket of this!
