The Cynics live on video!

Last Thursday night saw Pittsburg's The Cynics stop by on their European tour. Fine, fine stuff!

R.I.P. Nikola Acin

The singer/rhythm guitarist from my favourite of the current crop of French garage-rock groups has sadly, some would say stupidly, died from an overdose. By all accounts, Acin was most definitely one of the good guys - funny, enthusiastic, passionate. He wrote about music but unlike most rock critics he could put his money where is mouth is and play rock'n'roll like he meant it. Because he did mean it. We tried to get the Hellboys to come over to play Dirty Water but, despite briefly having them confirmed to play in September last year, it never, in the end, actually happened. Have a listen what we all missed out on at the Hellboys' Myspace page.

Bands:
  • Lords of Altamont | See Lords of Altamont on Myspace

The Lords Of Altamont takes the raw power of 1960s punk and brings it into today to crank out rock'n'roll the way it was meant to be played - loud, fast and out of control. With a front man who commands the audience and has a tendency to jump onto his Farfisa (or set it on fire), a guitarist who unleashes a fury of feedback and fuzz, plus a bassist and drummer that form an unholy rhythm section, the Lords are a genuine, real-deal rock and roll experience.

  • Parents | See The Parents on Myspace

It's not often that you come across a band that truly does not give a f*ck these days, but The Parents are one of those rare finds. Forget your middle of the road typical indie band who don't dare venture from sitting on the fence for fear of disapproval, this Derby quintet are pure filth. Boasting dirty riffs and even dirtier vocals, The Parents are an orgy between the loud, sexed-up noise of MC5 and The Stooges, injected with the raw attitude of the Pistols, plus the sarcastic wit of Dead Kennedys.

  • Teasing Lulu | See Teasing Lulu on Myspace
After supporting such legendary bands as the Damned, Dead Kennedys and the Stranglers (whose JJ Burnel is responsible for the great production job on their Easy Action release "Black Summer") this female-fronted trio have built up quite a following with their '76 inspired punk. After Geordie punkette Louisa met up with Brighton popster Lucy, and introduced her to punk rock, Lucy's pitch-perfect vocals were transformed into a cathartic howl, with tales of hurt and revenge snaking around thuggish basslines and descant melodies.
